ESTONIAN MUSIC DAYS 2009
16 - 24 April, Tallinn
The spring once again brings you the annual Estonian composition review festival, the Estonian Music Days. Joining the past, present, and future of Estonian music, the EMD program presents both experienced masters as well as mere beginners. The presentation of Erkki-Sven Tüür’s oeuvre by the students of the Tallinn Music High School is one good example of how these two are organically brought together. Thus, EMD not only stands for Estonia’s current musical composition, but also for its offspring. Nevertheless, the festival is framed by two foreign performers-ensembles – Collegium Novum from Zürich and Athelas Sinfonietta from Copenhagen – though premiers of works by Estonian composers are prevalent in both of these programs. A focus on Scandinavian music and musicians also includes a concert featuring the Finnish organist Jan Lehtola who performs pieces by composers from up North. This will undoubtedly geographically expand the audience for the local music as well.
When talking about music – and culture in general – we often resort to geological allegories – we talk of fertile soil and changes in the landscape. There is perhaps no other tool as useful and irreplaceable for cultivating the soil and reshaping the land than a shovel. EMD has already been breaking ground with this allegorical shovel for thirty springs in a row, digging up that, which was sown the autumn before. And perhaps we’ll find even more under the ground, than the fresh sprouts... Because a shovel’s functions, as we know, don’t stop here. Every person’s individual joy of discovery is somewhat dependent on the length of their shovel’s handle and the diligence of their digging. This time, EMD has set a goal of digging long and deep enough to find music that is a discovery even for the oldest among us. We will present sensational, archeological finds, which should bring joy to even those who feel that certain cultural processes have been missing or who’ve been deterred by the local staccato.
We will fill in the blanks with mounds of soil! You can check out these finds at the big Mammoth Concert at the Estonian Music and Theater Academy where Tõnu Kaljuste and the Nargen Opera will give a musical, visual, and spoken review of our fresh discoveries.
EMD has long since ceased to be only about music. The selection runs the gamut from video art at the Sõprus cinema, basketball competitions at the Kalev sports arena, daily discussion panels at EMTA, all the way to midnight screams at Kuku Club. And the unbroken thread through all of the various and winding events of the week is Estonian music and its creator.
Happy listening.
