Erkki-Sven Tüür Was Announced the Citizen of the Year

On 26 November, Laine Jänes, the Minister of Culture announced composer Erkki-Sven Tüür the Citizen of the Year. The title was announced at the conference The Nurcery of Good Citizen.

As the Minister Jänes handed over the title, she said that this year's motto for the Citizen Day, Creative People – Successful Country, is like a synonym to our hero of today. 'He is a man among ourselves, living his life and doing his work in Estonia, giving his whole heart and being attached to his island, country and people – and still he creates grand music of the world. Now, in 2009, he does that in his highest creative shape and wide range, both in contemporary classical and rock music, home and abroad,' Minister Jänes said according to the Ministry of Culture.

The Minister of Culture Laine Jänes gave Erkki-Sven Tüür as a gift a glass sculpture made by Rait Prääts and the title will be accompanied by the prize of 20 000 kroons as well. The Ministry of Culture had altogether 23 candidates for the title of the Citizen of the Year.
