Sumera, Liina studied piano, flute and pop-jazz singing at Heino Eller Tartu Music College. She became interested in composition as a young girl when she often created music instead of practicing the instrument. Sumera continued her studies at the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy where she focused on sound engineering (with Siim Mäesalu) and composition (with Helena Tulve and Margo Kõlar). She furthered her skills in electronic music composition (with Alejandro Olarte), film music (with Päivi Takala) and video game music (with Sandra Mahlamäki) at the Sibelius Academy, Finland. Sumera has written music for chamber ensembles, symphonic orchestras and electronics. In 2012, she won a prize at the Soundtrack Cologne music competition for the sound design and composition of Felix Könnert’s short animation Apollo. Since 2013, she has written many pieces of film and theatre music: 20000 Leagues Under the sea (2013, dir. Vahur Keller, ENT), Little Prince Hamlet (2014, dir. Erki Aule, Estonian National Opera), The Secret
Society of Souptown (2015, dir. Margus Paju, NAFTA films), The Birds (2017, dir. Vahur Keller, ENT), Strawberry eaters (2018, dir. Mattias Mälk, Eesti Joonisfilm), The Overcoat (2018, dir. Meelis Arulepp, Sean Mullen, A Film), Melchior the Apothecary I, II, III (2021–2022, dir. Elmo Nüganen, Taska Film) etc. Sumera was awarded in 2019 for best original music for theatre plays Gulliver’s Travels (dir. Taavi Tõnisson, NUKU theatre) and Shadow (dir. Leino Rei, NUKU theatre). In 2019, Sumera received a special prize of the LHV Au-tasu award (a commissioned work for the Estonian Music Days festival) for her piece Conatus, an electroacoustic piece for 16 loudspeakers. The same piece was selected as one of the recommended works in the International Rostrum of composers 2018 in Budapest, in the category of young composers.
